The Beauty of Beginning Again: Why midlife could be your greatest act yet
For a long time, I believed that career success was a straight line. Having spent decades in the fast-paced world of women’s glossies, latterly as Editor-in-Chief of HELLO! magazine, where I worked for almost 16 years, my life was a whirlwind of glitz, deadlines, red carpets, and juggling family life, all with high-energy ambition. It was a world I loved, and one that inspired my fiction, including my novels in The Stylist series.
On paper, I had achieved everything I set out to do. But in my late 40s, life served up a plot twist: a quiet, undeniable whisper which got louder, accompanied by the physical signs of burnout. My pause was on doctor's orders. It was time to slow down, listen more closely, and rewrite my own next chapter.
Stepping away from a familiar career identity in your late 40s can feel scary. But I came to see that this shift wasn't a crisis – it was a calling into a new chapter. It was time to make an appointment with my life, to honour what matters the most, and reinvent. I spent two years qualifying as a life coach and building my new business supporting women to move through life’s reinvention moments too.
Reinvention and creativity rarely happen in the noise of daily life. They require space, quiet, and a clear mind. That is why retreats hold such a special place in my heart – and why I now dedicate this stage of my career to supporting women through their own transformations. When you step out of your routine and give yourself permission to step onto a retreat, three vital things happen:
Pause: You step away from the relentless demands of life to calm your nervous system.
Reflect: You tune back into your true values, asking yourself who you are now, rather than who you were ten years ago.
Organise: You map out realistic, intentional steps to move boldly into what comes next.
This simple, science-backed approach is what I call The PRO Method® a science-backed framework born out of my own midlife career shift and coaching practice, which I share in my latest non-fiction book, The PRO Method.
How can we create an intentional reset moment on a retreat?
Whatever life change you are going through, know this: your age and experience is not a limitation – it is your greatest super-power. You bring decades of lived wisdom, resilience, and creativity to the table. Just like writing a novel, when one chapter comes to a natural close, it isn't the end of the book. It is simply the moment you turn the page to discover what the heroine does next.
