WITH
CLARE RICHARDSON
STYLIST & TASTEMAKER
One of the most respected and sought after names in the fashion industry, Clare Richardson has had a long and successful career as a stylist and tastemaker working with brands such as Hermes, Balenciaga and Calvin Klein.
WHAT DOES A RETREAT MEAN TO YOU?
For me, a retreat is about stepping away from the usual routine to reset - mentally and physically. It’s a rare chance to slow things down, focus on your wellbeing, and take care of yourself without distraction. I always come back with a clearer head and more energy.
A contributing fashion editor to both WSJ and British Vogue, Clare has collaborated with photographers Lachlan Bailey, Dan Jackson, Ethan James Green, Peter Lindbergh, Dan Martensen, Josh Olins, Gray Sorrenti and Inez & Vinoodh for these and other editorial titles. Memorable projects for Clare include styling Margot Robbie for British Vogue and a supermodel cover with Amber Valetta, Carolyn Murphy and Shalom Harlow for WSJ magazine.
CAN YOU WALK US THROUGH YOUR MUST-PACK ESSENTIALS FOR A YOGA RETREAT? ANY GO-TO ITEMS YOU NEVER LEAVE BEHIND?
A few functional but well-cut yoga sets, oversize shirts (my favourites are vintage Celine by Phoebe Philo, in case you are wondering), a pair of Birkensocks and a reusable water bottle. I always bring a silk eye mask (the ones from Slip are lovely), a few skincare basics, and something like a notebook or journal to keep track of thoughts or ideas that come up when I’m away from daily life.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE BRANDS FOR EXERCISE THAT ARE BOTH FUNCTIONAL AND STYLISH?
I like The Upside, Ernest Leoty, and Live The Process—they all make pieces that look good but hold up during actual movement. Being comfortable when working out has got to be the priority - I always say ‘don’t let the clothes wear you’ and so I’d recommend really seeking out a brand (and the correct size) that suits your body and your workout style. Adjusting waist brands and straps constantly is not going to create the zen-like vibe we are all working towards on retreat!
WHAT ASPECT OF A RETREAT DO YOU MOST LOOK FORWARD TO?
The structure. Having a schedule that includes movement, good food, and quiet time makes it easier for me to relax properly. I also enjoy being around people who are there for the same reason - there’s a shared focus on health and feeling good, without pressure.
ARE THERE ANY BEAUTY OR SKINCARE ITEMS YOU ALWAYS BRING WITH YOU FOR THAT POST-YOGA GLOW?
A solid moisturiser, essential SPF, and something hydrating like a vitamin C serum. I love Augustinus Bader or a Sisley face mask when I want something more targeted, and Weleda Skin Food is always in my bag - great after sun or flights. The de Mamiel Restorative Cleansing Balm is the perfect cleanser to remove makeup and SPF as well.
WHAT WOULD WE FIND IN YOUR CARRY-ON BAG – ANY RITUALS OR TRAVEL COMFORTS THAT HELP YOU SWITCH OFF?
Noise-cancelling headphones, a book (that I very rarely get around to reading!), a pair of cosy socks, lip balm and supplements; I really rate Wild Nutrition - I take a few of their products and have noticed a huge difference. Also sadly my laptop - but I do make an effort to turn it off once the plane lands!
SO MANY OF OUR GUESTS WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHAT YOUR GO-TO BRANDS ARE FOR SOME OF THOSE KEY ITEMS. WHERE DO YOU SHOP FOR…
Sunglasses
Browsing the sunglasses in the airport is always a fun part of a trip and I currently have a pair of Celine sunglasses that I love and am trying very hard not to lose or break! I would always focus on a frame that suits you rather than a particular brand.
A travel bag
I have a beautiful one from Métier that I love. It is an investment piece but the material just gets better with age and it’s now got so many memories attached to it now
Swimwear
Eres or Hunza G - they last and are super flattering
Loungewear
Nili Lotan is great for really soft knitwear and pieces that feel just feel special to wear
Shorts
I love a classic denim short - either Levi’s or Frame
Dressing for dinner
For a special night out, I love a little Saint Laurent mini dress or perhaps something softer and floatier from Tove
The perfect beach cover up
I tend to not have dedicated ‘beachwear’ as I like to be able to wear my clothes for lots of different occasions, so I am more likely to go for an oversized shirt or a Tshirt and some linen trousers. Brands like Toteme or Matteau really capture the holiday vibe but with pieces that you can integrate into your every day wardrobe as well.
Sandals
I think simple black or tan flat sandals always look very chic.I’ve had my eye on some beautiful ones from Khaite. I also love Le Monde Beryl for great flats and sandals.
Jewellery
I love a hint of gold jewellery when I am away so just something simple like a pair of hoop earrings or a gold cuff are great to pull together an evening look. Otiumberg are always good for these.
HOW DO YOU STYLE OUTFITS FOR A SETTING THAT BLENDS WELLNESS, LUXURY, AND NATURE?
Personally I focus on breathable fabrics, relaxed silhouettes, and a selective colour palette - pieces that work for movement but still look sharp. But I know a lot of people love to embrace colour when they are away - it’s a chance to be bold and try something different without judgement. Sometimes you want to wear the red dress and if that makes you happy - go for it!
WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU'D GIVE TO SOMEONE GOING ON THEIR FIRST RETREAT – STYLE-RELATED OR OTHERWISE?
Keep it simple. Bring clothes that are comfortable and make you feel like yourself. Don’t overthink it - it’s about feeling good and switching off, not performing. The less you pack, the more space you have to enjoy the experience.
